EPFO, i.e., Employees Provident Fund Organisation constituted by the Government of India, manages the EPF under the Employees Provident Fund and Miscellaneous Provision Act 1952. EPFO portal is an official government site that provides complete information pertaining to the EPF. Registration on the unified member portal is mandatory for the members to view the EPFO member passbook online. The members can access the portal and view the member passbook online only after 6 hours of registration to the portal. Inoperative members settled members and exempted establishment members will not be provided with the member passbook facility. The EPFO member passbook will provide all the details regarding the contributions, withdrawals to the EPF as well as EPS accounts. 1. Access the official EPF website. Navigate to the “Our Services” option on the dashboard and choose ‘For Employees’
2. Go to the ‘Services’ option and choose ‘Member Passbook.’
3. You will be directed to a login page at this stage. Enter the login credentials, i.e., the UAN and the password.
Once you log in, all the member IDs linked to your UAN will appear. Select the required member ID and view the passbook.
The passbook will open in PDF format, and it can be either downloaded or printed.

The EPFO Passbook contains various components, the list of which is given below:
EPF Account Number: This is the main component of the EPFO passbook. The format of the account number is alphanumeric. The number denotes the State, Regional Office, Establishment Code and Member Code.
UAN Number: The Universal Account Number, i.e., UAN, is a 12 digit number that is issued when on enrolment to EPF. It is mandatory for the new member and organisation to obtain this number and get it activated. All the member IDs are linked to the UAN. UAN is an identification number for your EPF account and is required for all further transactions including viewing of your EPFO passbook. All EPFO members will be given a UAN member passbook and UAN portal passbook.
Primary Details: Details like the Establishment ID along with the name and address of the establishment, name of the member, date of birth and the date of joining the establishment will be available in the EPFO passbook.
Opening balance: The opening balance that constitutes the total contribution along with the interest earned during the financial year will be displayed under both the employee as well the Employer’s Column.
Contribution: The contribution done monthly will be displayed under both the employee as well as the employer’s column. The EPS contribution will be shown separately.
Interest: Interest will be calculated for both the employer’s contribution and the employee’s contribution on the basis of monthly balance and will be credited at the end of the financial year. The applicable rate of interest will also be mentioned in the passbook.
Withdrawals: Any EPF withdrawals made in the account will also reflect in the UAN passbook.
Closing balance: The closing balance constitutes the total employee’s and employer’s contribution along with interest earned and will be carried over to the next year.
Voluntary Provident Fund: Any contribution to the EPF account made beyond the stipulated 12% will be covered under Voluntary Provident Fund and will be shown separately in the passbook.

You can get the EPF balance without UAN through SMS. The SMS format for the EPF balance is EPFOHO UAN ENG (for English). Type and send it to 7738299899. The SMS service is available in various regional languages like Gujarathi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, Bengali, etc.
EPF members who have registered on the unified member portal and have an activated Universal Account Number can access the EPF passbook online. It is mandatory for new members and organisations to register on the unified member portal and obtain the UAN number.
