Grievance Redressal Mechanism

All banks and other housing loan providers in India have a well-structured grievance redressal mechanism that takes care of all the complaints of their customers. While most banks usually target at resolving the issues and concerns immediately of the customers at the Branch Manager level, if the customer is unsatisfied with the provided response, they can escalate it to the Nodal Officer or the Regional or Principal Nodal Officer for higher-level attention.

Most banks try to acknowledge and provide a solution to the grievance within 10 days of receiving it. In case you are still unsatisfied with the way the issue was handled, you can approach the Banking Ombudsman for redressal, as the last recourse. You can find the details about how to contact the Ombudsman on the Reserve Bank of India website. All banks look into the grievance redressal seriously and make every effort to satisfy the customer with an appropriate resolution.

Some banks in India even have a fixed day as a ‘Customer Day’ once a month, where customers can have a meeting with the concerned bank’s executives without any prior appointment. You can utilize this opportunity to meet with top bank executives and request additional support regarding your concerned issue.

SEBI Complaint Redressal System

There can be occasions when you may have a complaint against a listed company or intermediary registered with SEBI. For such a complaint, your first step is to approach the concerned company against whom you have a complaint. If you are not satisfied with their response, you should know whom you should contact to get your issue resolved.

Different Customer Care Helplines

Apart from general customer care helplines, many banks also offer dedicated lines for specific departments. For example, banks having a strong NRI customer base usually have customer service numbers exclusively for their NRI customers to handle their requests. Similarly, many banks have segregated helpdesks to help with loans or deposit enquiries.

If a lender gets a lot of customer queries regarding home loans and other credit products, they might set up a helpline for customers to deal exclusively with loan-related matters. This helps banks in providing a faster response in a shorter time period and enables them to provide efficient service to the customer.

For example, a bank might be getting a lot of queries from customers regarding their housing loan schemes, such as what is the repayment tenure, interest rate & processing charges, the maximum loan amount, eligibility criteria, prepayment penalties, late payment penalties, special interest rates for women, documents required, and so on.

The dedicated NRI helpdesk of a bank will help overseas customers with home loan schemes for NRIs and other credit products, forex questions, or information for opening an NRE or NRO account. This helpdesk will answer questions specific to NRI customers. There might be different interest rates, eligibility, tenure and terms for home loans for NRIs as compared to domestic customers. Therefore, a dedicated helpline will have staff that are trained in the department specifically and will be able to offer specialized information quickly.

Following are some common types of customer care helplines provided by banks in India:

  • Internet Banking Help Desk: Internet banking is gaining popularity among customers and banks have now started to set up a helpdesk exclusively to answer queries related to internet or e-banking. Certainly, a new e-banking customer may have several questions like how to register for it, how to get a user name and password, how it works, what information is available, what transactions are possible with Net Banking, and so on. Increasing adoption of Net-banking by customers for many routine queries like account balance checks or bank statements also saves a lot of time of the customer care resources of the bank which could be redirected elsewhere.
  • Customer Care Via SMS: Apart from toll-free or chargeable helpline numbers, banks are now increasingly providing SMS-based customer care services to their customers. You can send a message to a dedicated number of the concerned bank to get information about multiple products and services. This type of SMS customer service is another way by using which banks enable their customers to resolve routine service requests instantly and independently, without having to contact a customer care representative by phone, fax or email.
  • Social Media Platforms: Social media has gained so much popularity among the public that now banks too have started using it to interact with their customers and help them resolve any queries related to home loans or any other banking products. You can simply log in to the official social media pages of the respective banks and provide your feedback or raise any concerns.
