Mitigating tax payers’ woes amidst COVID 19 pandemic, the government has yet again extended deadline for filing original and revised income tax returns (ITRs) for financial year 2019 to September 30, 2020.
This is third alteration in the ITR filing deadline since March 2020. Earlier in March when first lockdown to combat pandemic was announced, the ITR filing date was extended till June 30 from March 31, followed by another extension till July 31. With the latest announcement , the last date for filing Income Tax Returns for FY 2018-19 (AY 2019-20) will be September 20. Already last date for filing Income Tax Returns for FY 2019-20 (AY 2020-21) has been announced as November 30, 2020.
The IT department announced the update in a tweet that said:
In view of the constraints due to the COVID-19 pandemic and to further ease compliances for taxpayers, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) extends the due date for filing of Income Tax Returns for FY 2018-19 (AY 2019-20) from July 31 to September 30, 2020.

Also note that, CBDT had its previous circular extended the date for payment of self-assessment tax for taxpayers with liability up to Rs. 1 lakh to 30th November, 2020.
